Where we work in Niagara-on-the-Lake
Old Town’s heritage district has design guidelines that shape what’s appropriate on street-facing work, profiles and finishes that read quietly on a 19th-century streetscape. In St. Davids, Virgil and Queenston, newer builds and rural properties open the door to contemporary glass and aluminum systems. The constant across all of it is exposure: lake wind, spray and freeze-thaw that punish hardware, which is why we specify 316 stainless outdoors and powder-coat finishes rated for the climate.

Ontario Building Code in Niagara-on-the-Lake
NOTL’s building department reviews guard heights (1,070 mm standard, with the 900 mm single-dwelling exception), handrail heights (865–965 mm) and the 100 mm sphere rule on any permitted work. Heritage overlays can add design review on top. We prepare drawings to the current code (O. Reg. 163/24) and coordinate with the town when a permit is required.
Glass that protects the view
For lakefront and vineyard-facing properties, topless glass is usually the right system: no top rail cutting the sightline, laminated tempered panels for safety, and marine-grade fittings. We run wind and deflection checks for exposed installations instead of guessing. See the glass railings service page for systems and specifications.
