Every staircase starts with raw, premium lumber and hand-craftsmanship. Our carpenters shape, chisel, and hand-finish each piece for a precise fit and a flawless surface. This philosophy underpins everything we do at Grant's Stairs and Railings, from material selection through the final finishing touches. We begin with carefully inspected, kiln-dried hardwood lumber. Each component is marked and cut to precise specifications, with attention paid to grain direction for strength and stability. Our joinery combines time-tested techniques (mortise-and-tenon, dovetail, and finger joints) with modern adhesives and fastening systems where appropriate. Surfaces are prepared through a progressive sanding sequence, moving from coarse to fine grits, to get the substrate ready for finishing. Finishing options include penetrating oils that show the natural wood grain, semi-transparent stains that add colour while keeping the wood's character visible, and commercial-grade polyurethanes for wear resistance. Each piece receives multiple coats of finish with sanding between applications. This attention to detail extends to every part of the staircase, from the visible treads and risers to the hidden structural components underneath.
