Dark Oak Staircase with Black Iron Spindles

Available as Custom Order

Deep-stained hardwood treads, white painted risers and slim matte-black iron spindles: a palette that reads traditional from the hallway and modern from the open side. The flight turns through a landing, with the balustrade rhythm held constant through the turn and the oak handrail set at compliant height throughout. Treads and rail were milled, stained and finished in our climate-controlled shop on Lakeshore Road; the spindles are powder-coated steel, spaced to the 100 mm sphere rule. Installed by the same crew that built it.

Project story

This staircase was specified for a busy family floor plan: dark, forgiving treads; bright risers to keep the hallway from feeling heavy; and an iron balustrade thin enough to keep sightlines open from the kitchen. The build followed our standard sequence. Treads were machined from select hardwood, stained a deep brown and finished in the shop, where dust and cure times are controlled; the risers were painted with a commercial-grade enamel for a crisp, wipeable surface. The balustrade uses powder-coated matte-black spindles set on a constant rhythm through the flight and the landing turn, with the oak handrail carried continuously at 865–965 mm above the nosing line. Because the stair was fabricated as a system, the fit at the newels and the wall stringer is tight, and the flight is quiet underfoot. From above, the landing turn reads as a clean, deliberate change of direction rather than a compromise. Stained hardwood treads · painted risers · matte-black iron spindles · continuous oak handrail · landing turn · built and installed by our crew.
