Project story

This U-turn staircase was built around a simple contrast: solid white oak treads and handrail against matte-black iron spindles, with clean white risers keeping the run bright. The shop work started with a parametric CAD layout, stringer angles, tread depths, riser heights and spindle spacing all computed together so the geometry met Table 9.8.4.1 (200 mm maximum rise, 255 mm minimum run) before anything was cut. The treads were machined from select-grade white oak and hand-sanded through a progressive grit sequence before finishing; the spindles were set to a uniform spacing that satisfies the 100 mm sphere rule without reading as a fence. The oak handrail runs continuously through the U-turn at 865–965 mm above the nosing line, with the joints worked so the grain reads through the bend. Installation took five working days: test-fit in the shop, protection of the surrounding floors, assembly, and a final walk-through with the homeowner. The same crew that fabricated the stair installed it (no subcontractors), which is why the fit at the newel and the wall stringer is as tight as it is.
