Project story

This recapping project replaced worn carpet and tired treads without touching the structure underneath. Once the existing stair passed, the old treads and risers were removed down to the sound carriages and new select-grade oak treads were milled to exact dimensions, with painted risers set flush for a crisp shadow line. All joints use traditional cope-and-stick joinery, which is what keeps a recap quiet: squeaks come from movement, and movement comes from loose joints. The result reads as a new staircase: uniform rise, tight seams, a durable finish, and no framing demolition.
